HOW CAN WE BE ACTIVE CITIZENS ONLINE?

Due to the coronavirus, our lives are moving online – work, education and learning, entertainment, socialising, dating, gaming and others. More and more young adults in India and all over the world are spending time online. What does that imply? How does the intersection of rights, individual responsibility and freedom play out online? How can we ensure to be active citizens even online?

Bridging citizenship from the traditional to the digital

Due to the coronavirus, our lives are moving online – work, education and learning, entertainment, socialising, dating, gaming and others. More and more young adults in India and all over the world are spending time online. What does that imply? How does the intersection of rights, individual responsibility and freedom play out online? How can we ensure to be active citizens even online?

Originally conceived as a card-game, “Online Nagrik” aims to equip players with the vocabulary, idea and understanding of digital citizenship. Digital citizenship refers to a set of norms of appropriate, responsible behaviour with regard to technology. In many ways, it operates within a similar framework of traditional “offline” citizenship.

The various online formats of FNF India motivate to political participation on the internet.

The game refers to the core demands of the FNF, according to which the Internet must be freely accessible and privacy must be guaranteed online. After all, the rights and duties of citizens in a democracy also apply online, because the internet is not a parallel universe without rights.

Unlimited expandability thanks to open source

Online Nagrik is offered in open source format and allows programmers and players to further develop the game, adding their own specific cases and current challenges. Games that build a community around themselves through the creativity of their users best reflect democratic ideals. This is one reasons why FNF and our partner SMART have chosen the open source format.

“Digital citizenship encompasses the standards that allow everyone to behave appropriately and responsibly in their dealings with each other and with technology”.
